I admit it, I watched the older version of the movie The Purge. I must say that I had no idea what it was and if I had read the reviews or had a clue what it was I probably would not have watched it. I now understand that there is newer version that just hit the cinema; The Purge: Election Year. I shutter to think what this plot is.
If you are not familiar with this movie this is it in a nutshell: In America, the year is 2022 and it is wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government sanctions an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. There would be no law enforcement nor emergency personnel allowed out on this night. This was put in place by “new Founding Fathers.”
It was designed to not only kill, but to kill the people who were hated and you wanted to be rid of. The point of it was let the people perpetrating the crime to unload their anger. It was said that in all the previous purges resulted in commercial growth and a society free of homeless, sick and unproductive persons.
Now isn’t that special? (in my best SNL’s Dana Carvey’s “Church Lady” language). So we see a movie that tells us that it is okay to get rid of those people that have wronged us, i.e. bosses, neighbors, colleagues. This will make it better huh?
I know it is only a Hollywood movie but one would have to think that there are those out there that would think this would be a grand idea. Yes, we have tons of homeless, hungry individuals, overcrowded prisons, senseless, horrific crimes and corrupt government full of double-dealing politicians.
This country is without a doubt in the crossroads of some difficult times ahead. When I was watching this movie I was thinking about how stupid this idea was. Of course this was coming from a spiritual, Christianity perspective. Script writers love to make us all think and arouse our senses of morbidity. Wouldn’t it be nice if we all could just get along and help one another in their times of struggles and needs?
